Understand Tornadoes — Stay Safe and Informed

Tornadoes are rapidly rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. They are capable of incredible destruction, with wind speeds exceeding 200 mph.

Tornadoes can uproot trees, destroy buildings, and turn debris into deadly projectiles. They occur most often in the United States, particularly in a region known as Tornado Alley.

Where do tornadoes strike?

Tornado Alley includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the surrounding areas. These states experience the highest number of violent tornadoes.

The map on the right shows the historical activity of EF3, EF4, and EF5 tornadoes recorded between 1950 and 2006. This data helps us understand where risks are highest.

Knowing whether you live or travel through a high-risk area can help you make better decisions during tornado season — from planning safe shelters to enabling alert systems in advance.

Most tornadoes last less than 10 minutes, but they can cause long-lasting damage. That’s why real-time alerts are essential — even a few seconds can make a difference.

Our system automatically checks for active alerts and upcoming forecasts near your location, using official weather data and geolocation technology.

What does a tornado look like?

Tornadoes often appear as a funnel-shaped cloud reaching from the sky to the ground. The photo here shows a classic tornado over open fields.

If you ever see this formation and hear sirens or alerts, take shelter immediately in an interior room or basement. Avoid windows and stay low.
